  7. What is the legal basis on which a warship can stop and search a yacht in international waters looking, say, for drugs or weapons? Similarly, on what legal basis can a warship stop and search in international waters a merchant vessel suspected of violation sanctions against, say Iran or North Korea?

  14. This was very fascinating, thank you. My favourite were the pirate radio stations who floated offshore outside of national jurisdiction and who played music that wasn’t permitted in the country because of all the moral panic.

  27. If a new island was discovered in the Pacific:

The US would take its oil.
    The UK would colonize it.
Spain would have a civil war.
    France would surrender.
    Mexico would immigrate there.
    Russia would make it communist.
    Japan would murder everyone.
Turkey would only take half of it.
Greece would lose all its money.

  29. Damn, I thought 5 miles out was international waters! I don't even remember how I got that now apparently bad info. I was thinking about building a fishing/house-boat to get out of an increasingly corrupt US without sacrificing some perks of living near civilization. Oh well. I guess it's a good thing I was informed about this issue before I spent much time or any money on it.
