Coronavirus fears rise as cruise ship docks in Perth

A cruise ship suspected of carrying 250 people with respiratory illnesses has docked in Perth to refuel.

MSC Magnifica claimed everyone on board the ship was well but the Western Australian government said it received “inconsistent advice” from the cruise company and feared hundreds of the ship’s 700 passengers were unwell.

“Over the past 24 hours, the vessel has provided inconsistent advice to both the state and federal governments about the health of its passengers and its intentions around disembarkation,” the state government said.

The ship will be allowed to refuel but no passengers will be allowed to disembark.

  1. In Australia, we should NEVER allow any of these floating virus factories to embark or disembark in any of our ports they are not welcome here ever again. Any moron that decides to take a cruise has to face the consequences of traveling on a plague ship, it not our problem but theirs.

  2. They better not let them off! Western Australians will revolt and heads will roll for sure. Unlike in other pussified states, such as NSW.

  3. The people an the cruise company should all be held accountable for this. They knew about this pandemic well before they embarked an that cruise ships are nothing but a giant petri dish for this virus. They need to piss off they are from the worst infected countries. This is ridiculous. Humans of the lowest iq possible we don't need them stealing our resources an our oxygen.

  4. This ship was docked @ Station Pier in Melbourne on the 19-3-2020. I would like to know why the Vic Gov allowed it to dock?

  5. I'm glad this is old news because ever since people saw the whole diamond princess cruise ship saga, nobody is on cruise ships anymore. oh wait, what's this? This is new news? tsk tsk. The Ship companies should be liquidated and the money given to the hospitals. All pleasure cruises should have stopped immediately after the first case.

  6. The MSC Magnifica was on a world cruise that left January 4 before any of this Covid-19 had become a global pandemic. It hadn't even made it out of China yet. So, these folks got on a cruise when the world was very different from today when everything was otherwise normal. As with all other cruises when the industry shut down earlier this month, the Magnifica was trying to find a port to disembark passengers and get them home. There are still some 30 ships in limbo around the world. Many of them have been at sea for quite a while, some since January and February, even before the Diamond Princess or Grand Princess. Most don't even have cases of Covid-19 onboard. In many cases, they have been allowed to stop for fuel and provisions, but not to disembark passengers. So, the ships have continued to sail on in hopes that a port will allow them to disembark the passengers. The passengers that boarded this ship at the beginning of January had no idea what was going to happen 2+ months into their voyage.

  11. Why on earth are we even taking the risk by letting this ship dock in Perth?

Australia is an isolated continent. The only way that coronavirus got here in the first place is from international travellers.

    Shut the bloody borders already!!!!

  12. You people have just been lied to on several issues.
    – Bunkering can easily take place at anchor. No need to come alongside. There is a reason they are not telling you why they allowed the vessel to berth.
    – There is a pilot on board. That pilot will have boarded the vessel at the fairway buoy and will now dismbark at the berth, spreading that virus all over wherever he goes.

Trust media ? No way ! Even after my facts revealing their incompetent reporting those same media will ignore this.

  17. An international shipping port is a border crossing. This is a Commonwealth Jurisdiction & the Border Force should quarantine these passengers. As it's COMMONWEALTH JURISDICTION, the Australian Defence Force can move in with their medics. Troops can be used to replenish supplies also.
