6,000 passengers stuck on carnival cruise ship lockdown quarantine as Wuhan coronavirus
An estimated 6,000 passengers and crew are being held onboard the Costa Smeralda while medical teams run diagnostic tests on a 54-year-old Chinese woman and a traveling companion who are quarantined, the Italian cruise line confirmed to USA TODAY.

The quarantine comes amid concerns about the coronavirus outbreak, which originated in Wuhan, China.

The woman and her traveling companion reportedly boarded the ship on Jan. 25 in Savona, Italy, and she or he subsequently developed fevers and difficulty breathing, consistent with an individual conversant in things but not authorized to talk publicly.

The Costa Smeralda is currently docked at the port of Civitavecchia, located about 50 miles northwest of Rome, consistent with the cruise liner tracking website Vesselfinder. Its itinerary also took passengers to Marseilles, France, and therefore the Spanish ports of Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.

Because the ship is working under a sanitary protocol to isolate the sick passengers, none of the passengers or crew onboard are being allowed to disembark while medical teams run tests, the source said. it’ll likely take a couple of hours for the medical team to verify the test results.

What is a sanitary protocol?

Costa Cruises’ sanitary protocol steps, which are under the auspices of the Italian health authorities, are unclear. But for U.S. vessels, the Centers for Disease Control procedure for suspected cases of influenza-like illnesses (people with a fever over 100℉ and a cough or sore throat) is to notify the ship infirmary as soon as possible and isolate the sick passenger or crewman in their cabin until a minimum of 24 hours after their fever dissipates.

If the diseased person must leave the cabin, he or she is suggested to and occupy least six feet from people and wear a surgical mask (or cover the nose and mouth with tissues if no masks are available).

If it becomes necessary to require the person to a hospital, the power should be warned beforehand of the patient’s arrival.

After disembarkation, the CDC recommends that the sick individual remain reception or a hotel near the port until a minimum of 24 hours after their fever breaks before traveling on further.

Passengers and crew who inherit contact with the diseased person are advised to watch their own health for up to 5 days after exposure.

So far, there are five confirmed cases within the United States: two in California and one in Illinois, Arizona and Washington State, respectively.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the list of nations outside of China with confirmed cases includes Australia, Cambodia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea , the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

  2. why did they let the sick Chinese passengers to ever come on board. If the Chinese passengers knew that they were sick and boarded the cruise. They should face a crime.

  3. It said Carnival Cruise ship, but then said it was a Costa Cruises. I didn’t hint they were the same cruise company. This is not good no matter what way you look at it.

  5. So…protocol is to isolate in the cabin, but not quarantine. But it would appear because of the 14 day silent contagion, incubation period, passengers will now exponentially expose one another because the virus was initially undetected among them? Is Carnival prepared to offer food service for the duration? Will group dining continue?

Worldwide (officially) 170 dead, a few less than that number cured out of 7822 total. Will the rest recover? Ultimately die? Suffer lung, heart and other permanent damage known to occur in virulent flu cases?

Stats: 83% contagion rate, 15% kill rate, according to American Medical Journal, "The Lancet." Do the math: 6000 people onboard the Carnival ship = 900 dead and 4980 sick. And how many of the infected will ultimately die, suffer ongoing illness, or permanent disability?

Surely this containment order will be reviewed and reversed. Or, if mercy prevails, the Chinese couple's test results will be negative for Coronavirus.
